Introduction
“A Sunny
Morning” is a one-act play by Serafin and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero brothers, celebrated Spanish playwrights of the early twentieth century. The story is centred on two old lovers in
their 70s who meet at a park in Madrid as strangers and get into a heated of words. They soon discover that they were involved in a romantic past. The man
is Don Gonzalo and the lady is Dona Laura.
Meeting of Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura
/ Background / Setting
The Autumn
season in the background presents the ripeness of life coinciding with the
entry of two key characters in the play Don Gonzalo and Dona Laura, who are in their twilight years, past their prime youth and attraction. They meet at a park in Madrid but are not able to identify each other at the beginning. Don Gonzalo annoys Dona Laura
as he scares away the birds she was feeding. Laura picks up an exchange of words. He retorts initially, though, gives up soon, and
offers her a pinch of snuff that reconciles them.
Flashback / The past
When Don Gonzalo
reads from Campoamor’s ‘Twenty years pass. He returns’, both feel that they
were the lovers in the past. But they choose to pretend to hide their
identities. Don Gonzalo tells Laura that he was Gonzalo’s cousin and Dona Laura says
that she heard about Dona Laura’s story through her friend.
Their Love story - Dona Laura’s
version
Dona Laura tells Don Gonzalo that she heard from her friend about Laura
Llorente who lived at Maricela in Valencia. She was known as ‘The Silver Maiden’ in
her locality. The gallant horseman, Gonzalo's cousin would pass by on horseback every morning down the rose
path under her window and would toss up to her balcony a bouquet of flowers.
Later in the afternoon he would return by the same path and catch the bouquet
of flowers she would toss him. Laura’s parents wanted to get her married to a
merchant. Once, while he was waiting under her window, the merchant arrived and insulted the horseman. This resulted in a duel. The merchant was badly wounded by the gallant horseman. He
fled, fearing the consequences. Laura waited for days and months, and not
hearing from him for long, she left her home one afternoon and went to the
beach. While she sat engrossed in his thoughts on a rock, she was washed away by the high waves.
Don Gonzalo’s version
Gonzalo tells Laura that the gallant horseman was his cousin, and he heard this story from him. He loved the silver maiden intensely. Once, while waiting under the balcony of the silver maiden, the local merchant who was to marry her appeared. A duel ensued, and the merchant was seriously wounded. Gonzalo's cousin, fearing the consequences, took refuge in Seville. He then fled to Madrid. He wrote many letters to her, but they
were intercepted by her parents. As there was no reply, he joined
the army in , and met his death in Africa.
Conclusion / Reality
In fact, two years
later, after the incident, Laura married someone and settled down in her life. Similarly, Gonzalo, disappointed over his lost love, ran away to Paris with a ballet dancer three months later. Thus, they were separated. But when they met in the park after
nearly 50 years, both of them were able to recall their intense romantic
affair. Although they came to know about each other, they did not
want to reveal, for they were not in their best looks. They had lost their charming youth. However, their chance meeting on a sunny morning adds new sunshine to their renewed friendship.

DeleteDear Sir,
ReplyDeleteI have a doubt in one question...can u plz clarify it..
In Romeo and Juliet, 'for earth too dear' suggests that the lady's beauty is
1.divine
2.rare
3.expensive
The phrase suggests her beauty to be rare on earth.
DeleteHowever, your option goes with how you perceive in poetry. Such questions are not set for testing.
It is rare because expensive beauty is not correct collocation. Dive beauty cannot be ruled out either

DeleteHello sir I Have a question about the play a sunny morning
Why the title of the play is(A Sunny Morning)?Does it have any deep meaning or is it just a reference to the time when the two old lovers meet?
The title 'A Sunny Morning' is very much in tune with the theme. The lead characters are in their evenings of their life. At this stage their physical changes do not allow them to reveal their true selves to each other. So, they rather want to look forward to sunny mornings day after day. In this context, the title of the play is more deep in its meaning and message.
DeleteThank you Sir, it was really a brilliant explanation. God bless you.

ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteThanks for raising a doubt. This question calls for your own view. Unknown characters get to know about their past, but they don't want to reveal. So, they try to fool each other through fictitious stories.

Hi sir ,
ReplyDeleteI have doubt ....in the question 5th of comprehension 2, that I think option( a) fool each other is not sufficient to that question but I am sure that option (c) conceal their emotions is more related rather than option ( a) .
Hi
DeleteYou're right. It goes with one's reading and perception. Accuracy is not tested here.
Hi sir one of ur jainites.... Sir does the preparatory question paper follow the given blueprint at the end of springs?
ReplyDeleteThat's nice. Regarding your question, the QP, 90% of the blueprint works. Anyway, there are options for 4 and 6 mark questions. It makes hardly any difference. All the best!
DeleteThank you ! Sir your notes are very helpful.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome
DeleteSir.. Just one question
ReplyDeleteWhat is the theme of this one act play
Hi
DeleteIn short, two old lovers meet accidentally after a long gap; they still have their feelings, but their changed appearances won't allow them to reveal their true identities. They hope to continue to meet day after day on sunny mornings sharing their renewed friendship.
Tnx sir
DeleteHi
DeleteYou're welcome!
Sir I have one question:what kind of drama this play,
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteIt's a one act comedy.
Hello sir
ReplyDeleteWhat is the realism of this play?
Realism here is, characters and setting are not elaborate. There is not much exaggeration in presentation of the theme. At the end, the characters understand the reality more than their emotions. So, they do not reveal their true identities.
DeleteTQ sir
ReplyDeleteWelcome...
DeleteCan you help me I have a search for this play and the title is : The Question of Identity in Serafin & Jaoquin Alvarez Quinter's A Sunny Morning.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does it mean and how do I write about it?
Hi!
DeleteThanks for your question. The question of identity means both Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo struggle hard to conceal their true identity for the obvious reasons that they know. You can develop the answer by refering to their old age when they do not look their best in contrast to their youthful days. This is why they continue to hide their identity. Some more points on these lines will make your answer. Thank you..
